The Story Project 3 Southwark Playhouse

Location: London

In the hottest week in July I spent my time in hoodies, jumpers and gloves. Why? Because I was deep under London in the Vaults of Southwark Playhouse. Ugly Sister Productions hosted their third annual new writing event, The Story Project and I came onboard as stage manager following a very kind recommendation from a mutual friend.

The project featured 13 different pieces of new writing, which meant 13 tech rehearsals of 15 minutes each and then two epic dress runs (one for each collection of 6/7 plays). I had two very lovely helpful girls from design who assisted me with changeovers in addition to their design work for the piece.

The whole experience was very positive, including some drama we had featuring a fire on the train line and an actor travelling away from London before his performance. We did some quick thinking and all was well in the end - he made it to the theatre in time for the first act. I would love to work with Ugly Sister again, as they made me feel so welcome and trusted me to get on with my job, despite taking the initial chance to take me on. I would also jump at the chance to work at Southwark again - the spaces there are beautiful!
