We have two shows left of OutFox's debut production of Spring Awakening. It has been a wonderful experience.
I've been with the production every day from the first rehearsal and I've had the best time. Working on Spring Awakening has been truly nourishing. The subject matter reminded us all what it was to be awkward teenagers, coming through that and accepting, if not embracing, who we are. It has been a honest discussion of shame and sexuality and how to own both. Its the first job I've done where I've been completely out -which has been so positive.
Three weeks on the rehearsal room sofa with the marvellous John Fricker were simply brilliant. I'm determined to work with him again as soon as possible. He and Kirsty have welcomed me to their company so thoroughly; I knew from the interview (at which I laughed at lot) that this was a company I wanted to be involved in. Kirsty has been a star, covering my days off in addition to drawing in press and audiences for the show (both have responded very positively). Not only did she take on my job - but did so on what we later discovered to be a broken leg!! I am forever grateful to her.
The cast are amazing. All eleven of them. Being a relatively young cast, (and given my protective, maternal instincts as an SM) they were truly my babies. I spent three weeks watching them work on the show, with intelligent and uninhibited approaches. For the past four weeks I've been getting to know them backstage. The sense of play offstage is infectious and so much fun to experience every day. I'm laughing so much.
Another face I see everyday is our sound designer/operator, Amy Mae. It has truly been Amy's Reign of Terror! We have our separate worlds of the play, but they work in harmony and I have loved being in a team with such a bright, friendly and talented colleague. Her audio walk is on my iPod and I love how she's captured the essence of the play and presented it in an enticing way. I listen to it when I'm walking to work, it's so good!
I will miss the production team and cast of Spring Awakening, it's been wonderful. But I know it isn't the last. We've already organised our next reunion! I'm also working with Ollie from the cast on my next piece (ten minutes of which is being hosted on Sunday night). I want to work with them all again, as a director, as a stage manager - anything!
To the final two shows, to our after party, to meeting again and to working together again soon.
To John and Kirsty, David, Joe, Calum, JP, Ollie, Ellie, Evelyn, Ana, Andrew, Sophie, Rachel, Amy Mae, Jeskins, Gina, Gen, Kate and Karl.
Tell the story, drop it like its hot, do it til it hurts, enjoy it.
Thank you.
Amy
