La France, c'est genial!! It is sunny and warm here and Avignon is beautiful! We performed the show at L'Université d'Avignon the first day, after delivering our workshop, 'Lost/Faith/Art' to the students. The next day we set up at Théâtre Au Chapeau Rouge which is a tiny theatre right off a side street in Avignon. You step in the building and you're in the auditorium. So very cool. We put our set into the space, it fit so well, perfectly offering a slice of the world we had created. The cafe next door provided the box office to the theatre, as well as a delicious fresh lunch of sea food and vegetables. Superbe!
The university's society for English-speaking theatre, Curtain Call, took us out for a meal at a typically French restaurant and it was amazing. Amazing! We all love the food here. Curtain Call had recently staged "Old Rabbis in the Sky" by Eleanor and so we met the cast and had drinks with them. It was fun to compare the two productions, especially as Jasmine (who plays Stencil in On Beauty) had played Spade. I'm sure George (playing Nude in On Beauty and new to the company) soon tired of us talking about this previous show. The French Old Rabbis was really well received and Eleanor's good name precedes her which is fantastic. After two performances and a workshop at Théâtre Au Chapeau Rouge we enjoyed a night out in sleepy Avignon before our final day of rest. While George and Vanessa (our stage manager) visited the Pope's palace, Eleanor, Jasmine and I headed up the hill into the palace gardens to soak up the lovely sun. I am sporting tan lines I am pleased to report. This trip has been very hard work but the sunshine and being in another country has felt like a holiday. I spoke a lot of French which I'm really proud of. For hours I could go without speaking English, I even started dreaming in French and Eleanor told me I spoke French in my sleep! A personal victory.
The show was very well received by the French, who applauded so much the actors came on for a second bow in every show. There was even a shout of "bravo!" Which was awesome!
