Old Rabbis Rehearsals

Location: Camden, London

Yesterday's readthrough was something of a success. It was so wonderful to hear the entire play out loud, as spoken by a bunch of very promising actors. We blocked the whole thing so the show has a good shape. Today I have been having individual monologue sessions with some of the actors who have long speeches.

The play is pretty dense with the information conveyed through the use of monologue throughout. It is such an interesting concept and I want to do Eleanor's work justice.

I've worked a lot on text-heavy pieces such as Shakespeare and Howard Barker, so I'm not ill equipped to deal with a play of this nature. But each new work I encounter brings a new challenge. The actors question the work, which I always encourage as it means that the actors are really engaging with the work. It also encourages me to consider things in more detail.

As a director, I am so excited to get this production going. In a stage management context I am more concerned as I have to find a rubber spade. One of the characters takes a serious pummelling! But I do get to make a couple of props.

Now for a rehearsal with sketch group Dregs. We've got a show tomorrow night and I'm teching it. Its a luxury to have a knowledge of the show, I am often given rough cues on the night without seeing the performance beforehand. I pick things up easily anyway but it means Dregs can focus on their show without having to waste time briefing me.

I do love teching sketch groups!
