This week I've been rehearsing for one woman show, Beside the Sea. I'm stage managing. We're due to perform at the Purcell Room (Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre) on the 7th and 8th March, next week.
The show is incredibly moving, it deals with a woman's decision to take her children for a trip to a seaside town, treating them to chips and a trip to the funfair, before killing them in a misguided act of love, to prevent them from experiencing the world which she has found so hostile. Not feel-good piece.
The actor (Lisa Dwan) is simply incredible. She continues to leave me a crying wreck after each rehearsal! Its exhausting for us all to work on, mentally and physically. I don't enjoy being reduced to tears everyday, it takes too much out of me.
The director is Irina Brown, whom I worked for during Britannicus. I was honoured to be asked to work with her again and to be paid to do so. Working at the South Bank is exciting too, I feel privileged to work in such a respected venue.
Alongside my daily rehearsals with Irina and Lisa, I'm also prepping for two more rehearsals. Restitution opens a week today (scary thought) and rehearsals are running alongside Beside the Sea performances so I'm flitting between both at the moment. I'm also starting rehearsals for Meri Neighbour, which I'm working on with Eleanor's friend Akkas. Busy busy. However that opens on 23rd March so once Restitution is open things will calm down.
In addition to these three plays, I'll be starting to rehearse for my Edinburgh (directing) project which will preview in London and Brighton before a month in Edinburgh (alongside my techie work). And of course there is one other thing...
